The distinction between sustainability and fundamental sustainability lies in their foundational principles. While conventional sustainability often refers to the ability to maintain systems at a bare minimum - essentially asking, "What can we do to keep this going for as long as possible?" - fundamental sustainability focuses on the underlying foundations of life, which are critical for overall wellbeing.

This concept delves deeper into the health and vitality of the ecosystem and human society, asserting that there is no acceptable state of health or environmental condition that is merely "sustained." In reality, the state of health is binary; one is either healthy or not, with no middle ground.

Thus, fundamental sustainability emphasises the necessity of flourishing systems rather than merely functional ones, advocating for a holistic approach that fosters both human and environmental wellness.

What makes anyone great is their foundations, their principles; the philosophy and outlook on life and the world which they apply to everything they do.

Likewise, we need to take those fundamentals, apply them on the greatest of scales (like running the world on electricity and keeping civilisation going), so that the question of making something which was not before sustainable never needs to be asked.

And here they are:

4 Fundamental Pillars of the Vibrancy of Life
